An unprotected copper vessel turnss green due to several chemical reactions taking place. During the corrosion of copper vessel, first a slow oxidation of the copper metal into its oxides takes place. After that due to another chemical reaction cuprous and cupric sulphide are formed and finally after another chemical reaction with carbon dioxide, copper carbonate is formed. The final copper carbonate is highly resistant to corrosion and hence the vessel will remain green.
A copper penny is usually made of zinc plated with copper. Copper reacts with oxygen and water to form copper oxide.
2Cu + O2 → 2 CuO
Black coating on silver is silver sulphide. Silver reacts with sulphur present in the atmosphere to form silver sulphide.
Ag + H2S → Ag2S
