Cell division is a process by which new cells arise from pre-existing cells. It is a method by which a mature cell divides and forms two nearly equal daughter cells which resemble the parental cell in a number of characters. Cell division also involves synthesis and duplication of various components of cell. Cell division involves two stages-mitosis and meiosis. In meiosis, mutual exchange of the correponding parts of the non-sister chromatids takes place due to crossing over which leads to evolution. In mitosis, two daughter cells are formed while four daughter cells are formed in meiosis. Since cell division leads to formation of new cells and cell replication, it forms the basis of growth and reproduction in living organisms. It forms the basis for continuity of life.
