 Cathode and Anode

In an electrolytic cell, the anode is taken as positive while the cathode is taken as negative. The electrons from the anode flow to the positive terminal of the battery, and electrons from the battery flow to the cathode.

The anode is the electrode where the oxidation reaction takes place.

Red⟶Ox+e−

The cathode is the electrode where the reduction reaction takes place.

Ox+e−⟶Red

Cations and Anions

Cations are positively charged ions and during electrolysis the cations move towards the cathode.

Anions are negatively charged  ions and during electrolysis  the anions move towards the anode.
