When force is applied at an angle, and displacement is not in that direction, that means not the 100% of the applied force is used to produced displacement, but less.
We consider only the part of the force that is in the direction of displacement. For this, we need the component of the force in the direction of displacement, which can be obtained using dot produce of the two vector, i.e. force and displacment.
Hence W = F . x = Fx cosθ.
where θ is the angle between the two vectors force F and displacement, x.
