ICSE Class 9 Answered
Calculate the depth of the salt water lake, if the pressure at its base is 16 times its atmospheric pressure. The density of salt water is 1050 kg m-3 and accelaration due to gravity 10 ms-1. The atmosheric pressure is 10 N cm-2 .

Expert Answer
Let the atmospheric pressure = P
Therefore, Pressure at the bottom of the lake = 16P.
Therefore, 16 P = P + [ hs.water x ρs.water x g]
15 P = hs.water x ρs.water x g
15 x 10 N cm-2 = hs.water x 1050 kg m-3 x 10ms-2
15 x 100,000 N m-2 = hs.water x 1050 kg m-3 x 10 ms-2
Therefore hs.water = 142.85 m.
