The process in which glucose is broken down to pyruvate is called glycolysis. It takes in the cytoplasm.

The process by which pyruvate is broken down to ethanol along with the release of energy is called fermentation. It takes place in mitochondria.

Both glycolysis and fermentation are a part of the life process respiration.

Differences between respiration and combustion:

RESPIRATION

COMBUSTION

  • Occurs in a series of chemical steps
  • Occurs in a single step
  • Carried out by enzymes
  • Carried out by heat
  • Biochemical process
  • Physicochemical process
  • Energy is liberated in the form of ATP and some heat
  • Energy is liberated in the form of heat and light
  • No light energy is produced
  • Light energy is produced
  • Slow process
  • Fast process
