Photosynthesis occurs when pigments, molecules in the plant cell, absorb light photons and transfer them around to create chemical energy. Different plant pigments absorb different wavelengths of light and these wavelengths are not absorbed at the same rate. These pigments are specific in terms of which light they can use. There are two types of Chlorophyll pigments, A and B. The absorption spectrum of chlorophyll A and chlorophyll B indicate that these pigments absorb maximum wavelengths of the blue-violet and red light of the visible spectrum. Red light has wavelength 680–700 millimicrons. Maximum absorption is in the red light. Hence, photosynthesis is maximum in red light. After 700 there is a sudden drop of photosynthesis which is known as red-drop.
