Alexander Cunningham thought that the Indian History began in around 500BCE with the establishment of the cities in the Ganga Valley. Thus, his main interest was in the archaeology of the Early Historic and later periods. He used the accounts left by Chinese Buddhist pilgrims who had visited the subcontinent between the fourth and seventh centuries CE to locate early settlements. However, when the Harappan site began to be unearthed and material remains began to be discovered, Cunningham simply did not have any idea about how old those were. When a Harappan seal was once given to him, he unsuccessfully tried to place it around 500 BCE.
