The second phase of photosynthesis is known as dark phase because it does not require light. However, it takes places with the light reaction simultaneously. The term 'dark reaction' is not an appropriate term because it suggests that the reaction occurs in the dark or at night which is not true. It is also called 'Light independent phase'.
