Both antacids and antiallergic drugs are antihistamines but they cannot replace each other. Why?
- Excess hydrochloric acid in the stomach causes acidity and the substances which are used to neutralize this excess acid in the stomach are called antacids.
- Similarly, release of the chemical compound histamine in the body causes allergy and the drugs used to overcome the effect of histamine in the body are called anti allergic drugs.
- Both antacids and anti allergic drugs work on different receptors. They do not interfere with each other's functions but interfere with the functions of histamines.
