Ashoka’s dhamma was propagated in the following ways:

  1. Ashoka made an example of himself for others by strictly following the principles of dhamma.
  2. He went to all the places associated with the life of Gautama Buddha.
  3. He ordered the construction of a large number of Buddhist monasteries.
  4. He dispatched Buddhist scholars to distant parts of the world to propagate the philosophy of Buddhism. His son Mahendra and daughter Sanghamitra went to Sri Lanka in order to spread the message of dhamma.
  5. Ashoka also appointed special officers known as Dhammamahamatras in order to spread and enforce the principles of Buddhism throughout the empire.
  6. He got principles of dhamma engraved in Prakrit on rocks, pillars and caves so that the masses could read and practise them.
  7. He organised the third Buddhist Council at Pataliputra in order to discuss the ways and means of propagating Buddhism.
