(1) Diaphragm and intercostal muscles
(2) Diaphragm flattens to increase the volume of the thoracic cavity and the air rushes inside the lungs.
(3) Chemical equation to represent the process of respiration in man:

(a) Residual air: Air left in the lungs, even after forcible expiration (1500 mL)
(b) Dead air space: Tidal air left in respiratory passages, where diffusion of gases cannot occur (150 mL)
