It was all framed where Oliver had to ask for more gruel.

There was a boy who was too hungry because of the condition out there and warned everyone that if he won’t get another bowl of gruel, he would eat up the boy who sleeps next to him at night.

This made the other boys so feared and a meeting was held to decide who would ask for more. In such a situation, poor Oliver was selected to ask when the meals would arrive and served. The moment gruel was served, it disappeared in seconds and everyone called Oliver as it was his turn to raise an alarm and hence the situation arose as such.
