The weight of an army tank is very large. This weight will exert a large pressure on the ground due to which it wont be able to run on loose surface. It may be able to run on solid land but not on desert soil or loose marshy soil. Hence, it rests upon a continuous chain. This arrangement increases the area of contact with the ground. Due to this, the pressure reduces and the tank is able to move freely.
