An arch is in the form of a semi-ellipse. It is 8 m wide and 2 m high at the centre. Find the height of the arch at a point 2.5 m from one end.

The arch is in the form of a semi-ellipse. Hence let AA' be the arch, and

 



AA' = 8 m. or 2a = 8 a = 4 m.

The arch is 2m heigh hence OB = 2m. We have to find the height of the arch from one end at a distance of 2.5 m. Let AL be 2.5 m. We have to find the height LM.

OA = 4 m, AL = 2.5 m OL = 1.5 m.

The equation of the ellipse is
