ICSE Class 10 Answered

Alkynes are unsaturated so how can they undergo substitution reaction

Addition reaction occurs to the molecules which have a double bond or triple bond.

These molecules can break one of the carbon-carbon bonds and share these electrons to form a new bond, that is an addition reaction.

Hence, alkynes are unsaturated hydrocarbons and they can undergo substitution reaction.

On the other hand, saturated compounds have an only single bond so, instead of an addition reaction, they can undergo a substitution reaction.
