Canals were the main source of fresh water in the old city of Delhi. There were many step wells which also fulfilled the water requirement of people. However, after the British took control of the city, they did not pay any attention to the maintenance and repairing of canals. The broken down canals were not able to fulfill the growing water demand of the people. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi was not willing to spend money on making adequate provision to supply water to the people. They were also reluctant to spend money on a good drainage system in the city.
