When sulphur and nitrogen oxides combine with water, they form nitric and sulphuric acid respectively. This acid rain intoxicates the water in streams of rivers, lakes and ponds affecting aquatic life.
Further, it may damage vegetation especially in regions lying in the higher altitudes which are surrounded by clouds and fog.
