Plants absorb water from the ground through their roots. During photosynthesis, the energy from the sun splits the water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. This splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen occurs in the presence of light and hence, the process is called photolysis of water. The oxygen molecules are given off by the plant and emitted into the atmosphere. The hydrogen molecules are used by the plant during photosynthesis to create energy in the form of ATP.
