ICSE Class 10 Answered
A solid of mass 50g at 150°C is placed in 100g of water at 11°C, when the final temperature recorded is 20°C. Find the specific heat capacity of the solid.( Specific heat capacity of water= 4.2Jg⁻¹°C⁻¹

Expert Answer
Heat lost by solid = ms×S×ΔT = 50×10-3×S×(150-20) = 6500×10-3×S Joules.....................(1)
where mS is mass of solid, S is specific heat and ΔT is change in temperature
Heat gained by water = mw×Sw×ΔT = 100×10-3×4200×(20-11)= 3780 Joules ..................(2)
where mw and Sw are mass of water and specific heat of water respectively
By equating (1) and (2), 6500×10-3×S = 3780; we get S = 582 kJ/(kgK)
