Let the velocity of ship Y,   vY = a i + b j ........................(1)

where i is unit vector in +ve x direction or pointing towards East ,
j is unit vector in +ve y direction or pointing towards North .

 Velocity of ship X , vx = v j  .........................(2)

Relative velocity of ship Y with respect to X ,   v = a i + (b-v) j  = -v i  .....................(3)

From eqn.(3) by comparing both sides, we get  a = -v  and  b = v

Hence velocity of ship Y , vy = -v i + v j

Hence ship Y is moving in NW direction with magnitude of velocity √2v
