A rocket is in the form of a cylinder surmounted by a cone. The cylinder is of radius 9 m and height 17 m and the cone has the height 12 m.  What is the surface area of the rocket?

Radius of the conical part = Radius of the cylindrical part (r) = 9 m

Height of cylindrical part (h) = 17 m, height of the cone (h) = 12 m

For the conical part of the rocket,

 begin mathsize 12px style l squared space equals space straight r squared space plus space straight h squared
l space equals space square root of space straight r squared space plus space straight h squared end root
l space equals space square root of 9 squared space plus space 12 squared end root
l space equals space 15 space straight m end style

Thus, ℓ=15 m

Surface area of the rocket = Curved surface area of the conical part + curved surface area of the cylindrical part

begin mathsize 12px style equals πr space open parentheses l plus 2 straight h close parentheses
equals 22 over 7 cross times 9 open parentheses 15 plus 34 close parentheses
