A potentiometer wire of length L has resistance R . Potential gradient is found by first connecting resistance 9R in series with it and then by removing it without changing source battery .what is the ratio of origin of potential gradient to new gradient?

Expert Answer
First case
Effective resistance of the circuit = 9R+R = 10R
Voltage = V
Using ohms law Current I = V/10R
Potential across wire = V/10R×R=V/10
Potential gradient across wire = voltage /length= V/10L........ (1)
Second case
Effective resistance = R
Voltage = V
Current I = V/R
Voltage across wire = V/R× R = V
Potential gradient = V/L........... (2)
Dividing (1) & (2)
So ratio = 1:10
