ICSE Class 10 Answered

A physics class has been assigned the task of determining and experimental value for the heat of fusion of ice. Neel and Ayush dry and mass out 25.8 gram of ice and place it into a coffee cup with 100 gram of water at 35.4 degree Celsius they place a lid on the coffee cup and insert a thermometer after several minutes the eyes has completely melted and the water temperature has lowered to 18.1 degree Celsius what is the experimental value for the specific heat of fusion of ice ?

answered-by-expert Expert Answer
Heat gain by Ice = Heat loss by water .............................(1)

Heat gain by Ice = mice × Cpice × ΔT + mice × L = 25.8×10-3 ×{ 2108 × 18.1 + L } ................(2)

where mice is mass of ice, Cpice is Specific heat of ice,  ΔT is increase in temperature and L is latent heat of fusion of ice

Heat loss by water = mw × Cpw × ΔT = 100×10-3 × 4187 × 17.3 .........................(3)

where mw is mass of water, Cpw is Specific heat of water,  ΔT is decrease of temperature

By equating (2) and (3) , we solve for L. we get L = 243 kJ/kg
