CBSE Class 11-science Answered
A mortar fires a shell of mass M which explodes into two pieces of mass M/5 and 4M/5 at the top of the trajectory. The smaller mass falls very close to the mortar. In the same time the bigger piece lands a distance D from the mortar. The shell would have launched at a distance R from the mortar if ther was no explosion. The value of D is

Expert Answer
1) The shell explodes into two pieces of which one lands very close to the mortar and the other lands at a distance D.
2) However, the centre of mass of the two pieces will follow the original trajectory and we can safely assume that the centre of mass will be at a distance R from the mortar which is supposed to be the distance without explosion.
