Let d be the initial distance between the given location and hill. 
 
echo heard after 4.6 s means, velocity of sound v = (2d) / 4.6 = d / 2.3 ;
 
in second case velocity of sound v = 2(d-300) / 2.4 = (d-300) / 1.2 ;
 
hence begin mathsize 12px style v space equals space fraction numerator d over denominator 2.3 end fraction space equals space fraction numerator d minus 300 over denominator 1.2 end fraction end style
solving for d, we will get d = 627 m
