The man has to select some or all of his 6 friends. This can be done as follows: The friends may be invited in single, in two's, or in three's, ..., etc.
The number of such selections is C (6, 1) + C (6, 2) + C (6, 3) + C (6, 4) + C (6, 5) + C (6, 6) = 6 + +++6+ 1 = 6 + 15 + 20 + 15 + 6 + 1 = 63
