Answer:

Figure shows the lateral shift of incident light ray on a glass slab due to refraction.
Let i and r be the angle of incidence and angle of refraction respectively.
in ΔABC, we have, tan r = BC / AB = BC / t ........................(1)
where t is thickness of glass slab.
in ΔABD, we have , tan i = BD / AB = (BC + CD) / AB = (BC / t) + ( l / t ) ..................(2)
where l is lateral shift.
from equations (1) and (2), we can write,  tan i - tan r = l / t  ........................(3)
For small angles, tangent can be replaced by sine. Hence we rewrite eqn.(3) as

sin i - sin r = l / t ..................................(4)

if n is refractive index of material of slab, then we have ( sin i / sin r ) = n ...................(5)

By eliminating sin r in eqn.(4) using eqn.(5), we have begin mathsize 12px style sin space i space open parentheses 1 space minus space 1 over mu close parentheses space equals space l over t end style .................(6)
hence lateral shift l is given by, begin mathsize 12px style l space equals space sin space i space open parentheses 1 space minus space 1 over mu close parentheses space t end style
