A lift coming down with a downward acceleration of 2m/s^2 . A boy standing in the lift throws a stone vertically upwards with speed of 5m/s with respect to himself. The time after which he will catch the stone is?

Expert Answer
We have two types of acceleration. One is due to gravitation that is termed as g.
Other one is due do downward movement of lift that is termed as a.
When the lift is moving downward the net acceleration is (g-a)
time taken to reach the maximum height = u/(g-a) = 5/7
time to taken to catch back the stone = 2×(5/7) = 10/7 ≈ 1.4 s
