A hot solid of mass 60g at 100°C is placed in 100g of water at 18°C. The final temperature recorded is 20°C. Find the specific heat capacity of the solid.

Expert Answer
Heat energy gained by water = mass of water × specific heat of water × increase in temperature
Heat energy gained by water = 100 × 10-3 × 4186 × (20-18) = 837.2 J
Specific heat of water = 4186 J / ( kg K )
Heat energy lost by solid = mass of solid × specific heat of solid × decrease in temperature
Heat energy lost by solid = 60 × 10-3 × S × (100-18) = ( 4.92 S ) J
where S is specific heat of solid
By conservation of energy , heat gain by water = heat lost by solid
4.92 S = 837.2 J or S = 170 J (kg K )
