A cubic solid is made of two elements X and Y. Atoms Y are at the corners of the cube and X at the body center. What is the formula of the compound?

The atom at the body centre makes a contribution of 1 to the unit cell, while the atom at the corner makes a contribution of 1/8 to the unit cell.

Thus, number of atoms Y per unit cell

= Number of atoms × Contribution per unit cell

= 8 (at the corners) × 1/8 atoms per unit cell

= 1

Thus, number of atoms X per unit cell

= Number of atoms × contribution per unit cell

= 1 (at the body centre) × 1

= 1

Thus, the formula of the given compound is XY.
