A bus starts moving with an acceleration of 2m/s^2 a cyclist 96 M behind the bus starts moving simultaneously towards the bus at 20 m/s.After what time will he be able to overtake the bus.

Let t be the time in seconds for the cyclist to overtake bus.
 
distance travelled by bus with acceleration 2 m/s2 in t seconds = (1/2)×2×t2 = t2 m
 
distance travelled by cyclist with uniform speed 20 m/s in t seconds = 20×t
 
Since there was a gap of 96 m between bus and cyclist, we have t2 + 96 = 20×t ...........(1)
 
by solving eqn.(1) for t, we get two solutions, i.e., t = 8 and t = 12 ;
 
first solution t = 8 is time for cyclist to overtake the bus.
 
second solution t = 12 is time for bus to overtake the cyclist
