A block of wood floats in water with 2/5th of its volume is above the water surface. What is the density of the block?

Let volume of block be V and density of wood be d. | |||
Given that the volume of block above the water surface = 2/5 V → Volume of the block immersed in water = 3/5 V |
By the principle of flotation,
Weight of the block = Weight of the water displaced by the immersed part of the block
i.e., V × d × g = 3/5 V× 1 ×g ........ (Here the density of water is taken as 1 g cm–3)
→ d = 3/5
= 0.6 g cm–3
