A block of mass 2 kg is placed on smooth wedge of mass 10 kg which in turn is placed on smooth horizontal surface as shown. What should be the minimum force ‘F’ to be applied on wedge so that acceleration of block is maximum?

If the small block of mass m is not detached acceleration a of the system is obtained from    F = (M+m)a
where M is mass of wedge and m is mass of small block.

Let R is the reaction force acting on the contact surface of small block.

R can be resolved along horizontal and vertical componenet as shown in figure.

we have ,  R cosθ = m g  .......................(1)

R sinθ  = m a .......................(2)

Using eqn.(1) and eqn.(2),  acceleration  a = g tanθ

Hence minimum force F = [ (M+m)tanθ ] g  ..................(3)
