Since the hydrogen gas is lighter as compared to air present in the atmosphere, when hydrogen gas is filled in the balloon it becomes lighter as compared to air surrounding it. Therfore the weight of the balloon becomes less as compared to the bouyant force acting on it and hence it rises in the air.
