Hi,
For normal speech to develop in a child, the hearing sensation must be intact.
Whenever there is a severe hear loss in child up to the age of 5 years, the child cannot hear the normal speech irrespective of the normal speech centre.
Because the child has never heard a normal speech, may not speak or may have a distorted speech.
The reason for deaf mutism can be:
- Hereditary defects
- Consanguineous marriages
- If mother has suffered from any diseases during pregnancy
- Consumption of certain antibiotic by mother during pregnancy
- If child suffers from certain diseases such as mumps, meningitis, encephalitis
- Head injury to child
