James Mill was of the opnion that all the Asian civilisations such as Indian, Japanese and Chinese were at a lower level than the Europeans. He felt that before the arrival of the British, India was ruled byt he HIndu and the Muslim dictators. There was religious intolerance, superstitions and caste indiscriminatin in the country. James Mill felt that Indian could only develop under the British rule as they could only bring happiness and enlightenment to Indians by civilising them. He believed that the European education, laws, art and culture was necessary to uplift the Indians. Thus, he believed that the British rule was necessary for Indians.
