The Berlin Blockade was enforced by the USSR in order to force the Allies to withdraw the new Deutsche Mark introduced in West Germany, USSR offered to lift the blockade if it was withdrawn. However, this was not agreeable to the Western bloc and they continued to supply everyday necessities to West Berlin through a massive airlift effort. The USSR did not disrupt the air supply in the fear of it leading to open confrontation. Eventually, as the airlift began to supply more goods than by the blockaded rail, the USSR lifted the blockade.
