What is meant by the phenomenon of diffraction and interference? Why the particle nature of light could not explain these?

Diffraction and interference are general characterstics exhibited by all types of waves, like sound waves, water waves or light waves.
In interferenc, waves from two coherent sources combine to give maximum and minimum at different points subject to the condition that path diffrence makes the two waves in-phase or out-of-phase. Hence we get bright and dark fringes of light.
In diffraction, light rays from single source, which are coherent in phase, combine at a point to give maximaum intensity or minimum intensity depends upon the pathlength difference between light rays.
Since these phenomenon are only due to wave nature, we can not explain these phenomenon by particle nature of light
