The torque which rises to return an object (twisted, rotating, etc.) to its original orientation is the restoring torque.
The oscillations of a simple pendulum is a very good example of effects of restoring torque. The centre of gravity of the bob lies below the pivot. When the pendulum is displaced, the restoring torque brings the bob back to its equilibrium position.
In case of moving coil galvanometer, the deflecting torque due to current in the coil is balanced by the restoring torque due to the elasticity of the spring supporting the coil. It is due to this restoring torque that the coil tends to rotate back to its original position. The coil continues to rotate till the disturbing torque is equal and opposite to the restoring torque.
