Let the original number be n.
8% of n = 
= 0.08n
= 0.08nIncreasing n by 8% = n + 0.08n = 1.08n
3% of n = 
= 0.03n
= 0.03nDiminishing n by 3% = n - 0.03n = 0.97n
Given, difference between the number is 407
⇒ 1.08n - 0.97n = 407
⇒ 0.11n = 407
⇒ n = 
Hence, the original number is 3700.
