when we mix two substances of same material but at different phase (like ice+water or water+steam)  which are at two different temperatures, the substance at low temperature gains thermal energy and the substance at higher temperature looses thermal energy. By energy conservation, heat lose will be balanced by heat gain.

Heat lose or heta gain is calculated by the formula "mass×Specific heat×Chenge-in-temperature". If there is a phase change like ice melts into water or steam is condensed to water we have to add the latent heat also.
