This mechanism is similar to fertilization process
In the fertilization, both parents contribute their chromosomes. Each gene is present as an independent piece in a chromosome. So from both parents, two copies of chromosomes come. Each germ cell will take one chromosome from each pair and these may be either of maternal or paternal origin. By the combination of both gene cells, the number of chromosomes gets normal resulting in the stable DNA structure.
In this experiment, if the progeny inherited a single whole gene set from each parent, for example, YY (green) and yy (yellow) and yes the experiment will fail because the progeny will be YYyy which is not possible. So, progeny receives only one allele either Y or y of a gene from each parent.
This is best explained by meiosis which is the reductional division of the cell in which the chromosome number of the cell gets reduced to half in the germ cell, which then fuses with the other germ cell restores the chromosome number.
Two alleles (dominant and recessive) of the same gene refers a single whole set of a gene.
