Initially, there were debates among the orientalists and anglicists regarding the education policy to be followed amongst the Indian masses. Finally, the government decided to introduce Western education with English as a medium of instruction.
Intorduction of Western education and English language helped Indians in communicating with each other in one common language. Indians also became aware of events that were taking place in other parts of the world. However, the British paid little attention to introduce quality primary education in India.
I think that the introduction of Western education in English language with an equal impetus to vernacular language would have been more favourable for Indians. Equal emphasis on Indian culture and values would have instilled a sense of pride amongst the Indians rather than developing a slave like mentality.
