Mahatma Gandhi’s experiments with clothing sum up the changing attitude to dress in the Indian subcontinent.
- Being a Gujrati boy, he often wore a a shirt with a dhoti or pyjama, and sometimes a coat. Even when he went to study law in London at the age of 19, he dressed up in Western clothes and cut off the tuft on his head, to aviod being laughed at. After returning from London he still continued to wear Western suits, topped with a turban.
- However, soon he decided that if he dresses 'unsuitably', it would make a more powerful political statement. Therefore, in Durban 1913, he first appeared in a lungi and kurta with his shaven head. He did this as a sign of mourning to protest against the shooting of Indian coal miners.
- After he returned to India in 1915, he decided to dress like a Kathiawadi peasant.
- In 1921, he adopted the short dhoti form of clothing. He started wearing this dress just on experimental basis for a month or two, but soon he saw it as a duty to the poor and henceforth he did not wear any other types of clothing.
- Thus, he consciously rejected the well-known clothes of those times and adopted the dress of the poorest Indian.
