Is area a scalar quantity or vector? how small area is a vector quantity?

Expert Answer
The magnitude of area is a scalar quantity.
But any element of area is not completely defined by its magnitude alone. For that we must know the orientation of that area element.
For example, area of a parallelogram is given as , where and are its two sides. The unit vector of area is normal to both and . So the area element is correctly defined only if its magnitude and direction is defined. Therefore, it is a vector quantity.
