"In Carbon Monoxide: 12 parts by mass of carbon combine with 16 parts by mass of oxygen"
Please explain what does '12 parts by mass of carbon' & '16 parts by mass of oxygen' refer to.

The chemical formula of carbon monoxide is CO.
Hence the molar mass of carbon monoxide is,
Atomic mass one atom of carbon + Atomic mass of 1 atom of oxygen
= 12 + 16 = 28
In this 28 units, 12 parts are of  carbon while the rest 16 parts belong to oxygen.
