In the Rutherford's Scattering experiment, if beta particles were selected instead of alpha particles,
The scattering of beta particles would have come primarily from their interaction with the electron cloud of an atom and followded by their subsequent repulsion as soon as they striked the atoms of the gold foil.
The beta particles would not have led to the discovery of the nucleus. That required a more massive particle with the same charge as the nucleus. (Since nucleus is positively charged) Only then would be the dramatic changes in direction of the alpha particles (helium, positively charged) lead to the idea that there must be a small, dense positively charged nucleus.
