Explain in detail with the help of diagram that when an ELECTRIC DIPOLE is placed in a NON UNIFORM ELECTRIC FIELD the dipole experiences BOTH TORQUE and NET FORCE

In uniform electric field, there will be torque acting on dipole that aligns the dipole with field direction.
When dipole is aligned with field direction, torque will be zero.
When electric field is non-uniform, the net force will not be zero. In addition there will be a torque on the dipole.
Let us consider a simpler situation when dipole moment p is parallel or antiparallel to electric fileld E.
In both the cases, net torque is zero, but there is a net force on the dipole if E is non-uniform.
It can be seen from figure, when p is parallel to E, dipole has net force in the direction of increasing field.
When p is antiparallel to E, the net force on the dipole is in the direction of decreasing field.
In general, the force depends on the orientation of p with respect to E
