Converging action of a convex lens:
A convex lens is made up of a large number of prisms such that the prisms in the upper half have their bases downwards and the prisms in the lower half have their bases upwards. Also, the angle of each prism continuously changes, suh that the prisms at the edges have maximum refracting angles as compared to the prisms below it. The central part of the lens is just like a glass slab. The rays of ligh passing through a prism tend to deviate towards the base of the prism. Morever, greater the angle of the prism, greater is the deviation of light rays. The prism in the upper part of the lens bends the incident ray downwards while the prism in the lower part of the lens bends the incident ray upwards.
The central part of the lens which is like a rectangular glass slab allows the incident ray to pass undeviated. Thus the convex lens converges the parallel beam of ligth at a point. Therefore, a convex lens is also called a converging lens.

Diverging lens of a concave lens:
A concave lens is made up of a large number of prisms, such that the prisms in the upper half have their bases upwards and the prism in the lower half have their bases downwards. Also, the angle of each prism continuously changes such that the prisms at the edges have minimum refracting angles as compared to the prisms below. The central part of the lens is just like a glass slab. The prism in the upper part of the lens bends the incident ray upwards while the prism in the lower part of the lens bends the incident ray downwards.
The central part which is a rectangular glass block passes the incident ray undeviated. Thus the concave lens diverges the parallel rays of light and the diverged rays appear as if they are coming from a point. Therefore, a concave lens is also called a diverging lens.
